Gallery Talk by David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek
Elliot Porter’s Photographs of Glen Canyon
Photographers David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek will talk about Eliot Porter’s photographs of Glen Canyon, which resulted in the book The Place No One Knew: Glen Canyon on the Colorado and served as one of the original inspirations for the exhibition The Great Unknown: Artists at Glen Canyon and Lake Powell. A pioneer of color photography, Porter made many visits to Glen Canyon in the 1960s to capture the extraordinary beauty of the places that would soon be submerged under Lake Powell. Though his book, published by the Sierra Club, did not stop the building of Glen Canyon Dam, it galvanized interest in environmental activism.
