The Ft. Sumner Public Library is proud to partner with The Bosque Redondo Memorial to bring Mr. Arnold Herrera, a Cochiti Pueblo native, to the Fort Sumner Library Annex Room on Saturday, October 21st at 2 p.m. for his presentation of  “The Way of The Drum”.

Mr. Herrera grew up in a culturally rich Keresan Pueblo environment immersed in traditions and the arts. With knowledge gained from his grandparents and his father, Arnold has become an accomplished drum maker, composer/singer, and teacher of culture to all audiences.

His program, “The Way of The Drum” is a way into the Cochiti Pueblo world told from personal experiences, traditional stories and teachings.  While demonstrating steps in constructing the famous Cochiti drum, Mr. Herrera tells about tribal political structures, language, ceremony, clans and moiety membership.  The roles of men, women, children, and modern Pueblo social problems.  Mr. Herrera’s journey covers the period from the 1940s to the present.

Mr. Herrera’s program is made possible by the generosity of the New Mexico Humanities Council and a grant for The National Endowment for the Humanities.  This is part of the Speakers Bureau from the New Mexico Humanities Council and their series, New Mexico History and Cultures; Art, Music, and Dance.  The presentation is free and open to public and all ages.
