The Palace Press Presents Visiting Artist R. Skye Tafoya

The Palace Press is honored to host visiting artist R. Skye Tafoya (Santa Clara Pueblo/Eastern Cherokee). Known for her vibrant, intricately woven prints and artist’s books, Tafoya will be working on a project at the Palace Press using historic printing presses. Museum guests are welcome to visit the Palace Press and see the artist at work during open studio hours, Thurs. - Sat., Sept. 10 - 12, 2 - 4 p.m. daily. This program is open to the public and included with regular museum admission.

Tafoya will also offer a public printing demonstration and paper-weaving workshop on Sun., Sept. 13, 1 - 4 p.m. Space is limited so pre-register at [email protected].

Wrap up the weekend with a “Print Party" on Sun., Sept. 13, 5 - 7 p.m. in partnership with Hecho a Mano Gallery, 129 Palace Ave., Santa Fe. We’ll have our little table-top press out for a hands-on printing demo and the gallery is providing refreshments.

About the Artist: Rhiannon ‘Skye’ Tafoya (b. 1989) is an interdisciplinary artist from the Eastern Band of Cherokee and the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribes. She earned a BFA in printmaking from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM., and an MFA in print media from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR. She employs printmaking, digital design, and basketry techniques in creating her artist’s books, prints, and paper weavings. Both of her Tribal heritages, cultures, and lineages are manifested in her two- and three-dimensional artworks that range in size from a few inches to a few feet. She is inspired by her family history of basketry and observing her father and maternal grandmother weave baskets from red willow, honeysuckle vine, and white oak. While her inspiration comes, in part, from Cherokee traditions, her artworks are decidedly contemporary, featuring sharp lines and bold colors.
