Members and donors were greeted with West-African drumming and treated to traditional Ghanian street fare before the drummers led the group into the Bartlett Gallery to experience the rich tradition of fantasy coffins. Artists Eric Adjetey Anang and Jacob Tetteh-Ashong were joined by co-curator, Mark Sloan to share the history of abebuu adekai—“coffins that communicate”—and the creative process.

The Art Underground: Fantasy Coffins of Ghana exhibition will run until September 5, 2027.

An Accompanying Exhibition book, edited by Mark Sloan, is available for purchase at the Lynn Godfrey Brown Shop at the Museum of International Folk Art.
