Film Screening: The Way We Carry Water

Join us for a special film screening in partnership with Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area of the documentary, The Way We Carry Water, directed by Makaio Frazier. The documentary was filmed in large part at Los Luceros Historic Site and features Northern New Mexican themes and culture. The site’s flock of Navajo-Churro sheep makes a special appearance, and Oreo the goat, in particular, has a role in the film. The film will be shown at 2:30 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. and is about 20 minutes in duration.

Filmed across four seasons in the valleys and acequia communities of northern New Mexico, the film follows Marcos, a young man grappling with the sudden loss of his grandfather while taking on the responsibility of preserving his family’s acequia — a centuries-old irrigation system that sustains both the land and the traditions tied to it.

Rooted in the heritage and rhythms of northern New Mexico, The Way We Carry Water is a deeply personal reflection on family, grief, and the enduring relationship between people and place. The film’s seasonal structure mirrors cycles of nature, loss, and renewal, capturing the beauty, labor, and quiet spirituality that define life along the acequias.

Film viewing is included with general admission of $7/adults and free to children 16 and younger, Tribal members, NM disabled veterans, and NM foster families.
