Guest Curator, Daisy Quezada Urena will be on site in room 11 of the Palace of the Governors to discuss her exhibition that combines historical and contemporary narratives through porcelain garment replicas and museum artifacts that highlight migration, identity, and ongoing legacies of violent appropriation and exploitative labor. The featured historical figure is Esteban de Dorantes, a North African man enslaved by a Spanish explorer. Estaban accompanied the 1539 Spanish expedition to find Cibola (the seven cities of gold) and played a crucial role in communicating with Indigenous communities. Esteban is among the earliest known Africans to set foot in North America-a complex symbol of slavery, resilience, and multicultural migration.
