Amelia White: The Most Influential Woman in Santa Fe
Please join Harry Worksman, produceer and writer, for an Auditorium on-site talk as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series.
In the annals of Santa Fe history, there are many women who stand out for their significant contributions, but conspicuously missing is a name most people don’t know – Amelia Elizabeth White.
Amelia first traveled to New Mexico in 1913, eventually settled there 10 years later, and soon became one of the most influential 20th Century women in the state as Santa Fe developed from a sleepy trading post into the center of art and culture it is today.
She was a significant landowner, a supporter of the burgeoning intellectual and artistic communities, a patron of the arts, and a committed community activist; leaving a legacy that is still felt to this day. Her name does not grace any buildings and there are no plaques giving her credit for her altruistic, public-minded works. A single park is the only location that bears her name, also a gift to the city for the enjoyment of all people.
