The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents Piñatas: A Mexican Art of Paper and Paste, a traveling exhibition exploring the rich history and cultural significance of one of Mexico’s most recognized folk art traditions. This exhibition highlights the pinata’s of traditional Albuquerque-based pinata maker Francisco Rodriguez. Known in Mexico as cartonería, the art of paper and paste is woven into the fabric of Mexican cultural life. Cartoneros, the skilled artisans who practice this tradition, bring intricate paper objects to life using a variety of techniques and recipes passed down through generations. Of all cartonería’s many expressions, piñatas are the most widely recognized outside of Mexico. This exhibition is organized by MOIFA in partnership with the New Mexico Rural Services Program of the New Mexico State Library and is offered at no cost to host venues which are rural libraries across the state. Funding is generously provided by the International Folk Art Foundation, Friends of Folk Art, donors to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Exhibition Development Fund and the MOIFA Advancement Committee of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For more information and to request this exhibition for your venue, visit the New Mexico State Library booking page.
