Best of Show: Making History at Santa Fe Indian Market

Each year, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) presents Best of Show and other awards at Santa Fe Indian Market—a century-long tradition honoring extraordinary artwork across disciplines. First established in 1922 under the direction of curator Kenneth Chapman at the Museum of New Mexico, the Indian Market awards program has helped define the field of contemporary Native art, shaped successful careers, and expanded public recognition of Native artistic excellence.    Developed in partnership with the Southwest Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), Best of Show traces the history of this prestigious awards ceremony and its evolution in relationship to economic, cultural, political, and institutional contexts. Featuring award-winning artwork and photographs of the judging process and awards ceremony, the exhibition invites visitors to look closely at what artistic excellence has meant and who has defined it, over the span of Indian Market’s 104-year history. Best of Show opens August 14, 2026, in conjunction with the 104th Santa Fe Indian Market.   On view in the JoAnn and Bob Balzer Native Market and Contemporary Art Gallery.    Images by Kitty Leaken
