MIAC | AUGUST 2023

“Across more than two-dozen weavings, photographs, digital design pieces and sartorial ephemera that represent artists old and new, Horizons not only showcases textile arts as a shared multigenerational Diné tradition, it moves the conversation from collectors and trading posts back into the original language of practical use and deeper meaning. In addition, the exhibit unfolds a shifting institutional approach, with dated curatorial ideas falling aside to make way for more collaborative and dynamic planning and execution strategies.” – Alex De Vore, Santa Fe Reporter Cover Story. The opening weekend of ‘Horizons’ was made special by the many people who came out to support. From the curatorial committee’s family members to trustees, dedicated members and curious museum and weaving enthusiasts – the audience was diverse and impressed. I would like to thank the wonderful donors who supported this exhibition, in particular MNMF Trustee France Córdova and her partner Christian Foster. Because of the donors and their trust in the museum, the exhibition was truly allowed to innovate and express itself in culturally significant ways.

The beloved Breakfast with the Curators series is back at Museum Hill Café next month. Click this link to learn more about the events and to save your seats. Tickets are $35 for MNMF members and $40 for non-members. Tickets include a full breakfast at Museum Hill Café and a private tour at MIAC with various curators. Ticket proceeds benefit MIAC educational programming.

Save the date for the return of the Collectors’ Sale, set to take place the weekend of October 20-22, 2023. The event will include a small auction and an opportunity to shop collectible Native American art. Drop-off days and more event information will be announced soon.

Lastly, Southwest Planning and Marketing reported that the 2023 Native Treasures Art Market generated an impressive $1.5 million in local economic impacts. They also reported that shoppers spent more than $520,00.00 at the art market over the weekend, and 48% of visitors were fist-time Native Treasures attendees. These are wonderful impacts to accompany the fact that the event also raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the museum’s great work. We are happy to announce that the New Mexico Tourism Department has already awarded the Native Treasures Art Market a sponsorship for the 2024 event. This is all wonderful news as we move forward towards the 20th anniversary of the market in 2024!
