MIAC | DECEMBER 2023

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) announced the departure of Executive Director Polly Nordstrand, who has been with MIAC since October 2022. Polly’s last day was Friday, December 1. We are grateful to Polly for her efforts to strengthen and improve our state museum over the last year. Click here to read the press release.

Save the dates! MIAC is excited to announce the next iteration of the Native Narratives series featuring the Gaussoin Family. The internationally celebrated family of Picuris Pueblo and Navajo jewelers, sculptors and designers will speak as a family about their work and how it fits into the narrative of Here, Now and Always. The talk will take place at the museum on Friday, December 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. This series is generously sponsored by the Gale Family Foundation.

The Museum Hill Winter Glow Stroll will take place Friday, December 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. The event is co-hosted by the Museum of International Folk Art and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and will feature farolitos lining up the walkway to both museums, holiday ornament making, holiday treats and family-friendly fun. The Museum Shops will be open late for holiday shopping.

This past year MIAC celebrated so many successes – from the opening of Horizons to the launch of the popular Native Narratives Speaker Series. Not to mention a very successful Native Treasures Art Market, dozens of tribal school tours, research requests, items repatriated and so much more. I see how dedicated and compassionate the staff are, no matter how many changes they face. I am truly proud to support this important institution, and even more proud of the donors who continually step up to help fund their great work.

I hope you will consider making a donation to support the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture this giving season. Your donation will enable the museum to continue foregrounding Native voices through exhibitions and programs that uplift and celebrate the Native peoples and cultures of the Southwest. If you have any questions about making a year-end gift, or if you would like to schedule a tour of the museum, feel free to reach out anytime.
