NMHM | December 2024

Holidays at the Palace
On Friday, December 13, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. NMHM will open its Palace doors to a fun evening of holiday cheer. There will be live music throughout the Palace, Palace press activities, Santa Claus will be in the courtyard with fun holiday giveaways, and of course cookies and cider. In preparation for the holidays, the Education Team is working with schools across the state by providing them with directions to create New Mexico History Ornaments. The student ornaments will be used to decorate some of the trees in the museum. This research activity is aligned to the New Mexico Social Studies State Standards. The Education Team is creating activities that allow students to choose topics of interest and to demonstrate their learning in creative and dynamic ways, such as the New Mexico History Ornaments.

On Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday, December 8, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the Native American Artisans Portal Youth Program will have a winter show at the museum to showcase the arts and crafts of Native youth artists. Admission is free to the museum on those dates. A perfect way to begin holiday shopping. The Native artists range in ages 5 to 17 years old. Over 75 children have participated in these shows annually. They sell their hand-made, traditional arts and crafts that have been passed down from their parents or grandparents. The youth show fosters development of young artists and provides an opportunity for them to build confidence and communication skills as they interact with the public in discussion of their art. Children who participate in the youth show often go on to become members of the Portal Program and leaders as members of the Portal Committee.
