Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site is hosting a special evening event, Winter Letters & Farolito Tour.

What: Visitors can take a guided tour from 6 to 7 p.m. that will lead them along a half mile walk around the site, decorated with more than 1,000 farolitos. Staff will share archival military correspondence and oral histories from the Diné (Navajo) and Ndé (Mescalero Apache) to tell stories about the people who once lived at the site. A self-guided audio tour is also available. Along with the tour, visitors can explore the Memorial exhibition, Kids’ Corner table sponsored in partnership with Fort Sumner Public Library, decorate sugar cookies, and enjoy food while it lasts. Local bluegrass/folk music band, The Lunas, will be performing at the event. Tickets are $7 for adults, free for children 16 and younger, for Tribal Members, and MNMF Members. Purchase online.

Why: Winter Letters & Farolito Tour is a unique holiday program that shares site history through a guided tour to several points of interest on the exterior grounds including the Mescalero Apache Remembrance Circle, the Pecos River, partial replicas of Fort Sumner, the Navajo Travelers Shrine, and the site of the signature of the Treaty of 1868.
