OAS | July 2025

The Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) continues to lead the field in uncovering and interpreting the human history of the Southwest. With decades of experience and a dedicated team of archaeologists, OAS combines scientific analysis with deep community engagement to bring the past to life. OAS is currently undertaking a wide range of research projects across New Mexico. Their work integrates advanced techniques like archaeomagnetic dating, ceramic analysis, and radiocarbon sampling to build a more accurate and inclusive picture of the region’s past.

In addition to their fieldwork, OAS maintains five state-of-the-art laboratories that support ongoing research and public learning. These include the archaeomagnetic dating lab—one of only a few in the country—and the ethnobotany lab, which studies ancient plant remains to better understand food systems, climate, and cultural adaptation. The team also works closely with Tribal nations and local communities to ensure respectful collaboration and knowledge-sharing in all aspects of their research.

OAS’s ability to carry out this important work—and share it through award-winning public education programs—depends on the generosity of donors. Your contribution helps fund essential research, conserve archaeological collections, and deliver hands-on learning experiences to students, families, and lifelong learners across New Mexico.
