MIAC | August 2024

This is an exciting month for the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture! The stunning new JoAnn and Bob Balzer Native Market and Contemporary Art Gallery will be opening to the public with the exhibition Driving the Market: Award Winning Contemporary Native Art. The inaugural exhibition, curated by Elisa Phelps and Danyelle Means, will celebrate the award-winning artists integral to notable Native art markets hosted across the country. All MNMF Trustees have been invited to a special preview party on Thursday, August 15 from 5:00 to 9:30 pm. The event in co-hosted by SWAIA and will include live music and refreshments. The addition of this exciting new gallery would not be possible without a $500,000.00 gift from JoAnn and Bob Balzer in 2021. To ensure the gallery’s continued success, Bill and Uschi Butler established the Friends of MIAC Endowment Fund. We welcome your contribution to this endowment to help increase its value and annual distribution to the museum to support the growth of this exciting new space for contemporary Native art. To make a contribution, visit museumfoundation.org/give-miac/, mail a check or call me at 505.982.2282 to make a gift over the phone. The Driving the Market exhibition will expand the definition of Native art to include work in new mediums and non-customary styles reflected in the evolving market categories and awards. In addition to works of art ranging from customary pottery and beadwork; to cutting edge fashion, digital art, and diverse art forms; the exhibit will include a video wall featuring interviews with artists and others sharing their perspectives on the role art markets, including tribal and regional markets, play in honoring and promoting contemporary Native art. A highlight of the exhibition is a fully decorated 1974 Triumph TR6 convertible collaboratively created by twelve esteemed Native artists, originally an auction item for SWAIA. In other news, MIAC is excited to bring back the annual Breakfast with the Curators series August 9-16.  Four events will feature breakfast with VIP guests at Weldon’s Museum Hill Cafe followed by a special gallery tour. Admission is $35 for MNMF members and $40 for non-members. Breakfast is included in the price. August is National Make a Will Month, a great reminder to update your will or create one if you haven’t already. A will is an important estate-planning document that can help you transfer your assets with ease. With a proper will, you can ensure your assets are passed on to loved ones and support your philanthropic goals. This year, the Foundation continues its partnership with Thompson & Associates to offer complimentary services for our most loyal members, donors and supporters. These services will help you clarify your estate planning values and goals, explore the best options for you and your family, and provide personalized results to share with your estate planning professional. Foundation trustee Sara Otto and her husband, Nigel, recently went through the process and have had this to say about their experience, “We would like to thank Bill Gustoff for his exceptional expertise in estate planning. Over the course of several months and through multiple in-depth meetings, Bill demonstrated a profound ability to guide our thinking and strategy. His meticulous approach, combined with a deep understanding of the intricacies of estate planning, has provided us with clarity and confidence. Bill’s ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable plans has been invaluable as we think about the impact that we want to have on our family and the philanthropies we support.” Click on this link to view a short five-minute video explaining this complimentary service. This service is provided at no cost to you, and is completely confidential. You will receive unbiased advice to help you better prepare to create or update your will. If you would like to take advantage of this special opportunity and be put on the list to participate, please contact Laura Sullivan, Director of Leadership and Planned Giving at 505.216.0829 or laura@museumfoundation.org.
The FY24 Membership results are in. General Membership raised $939,000 last year against our goal of $900,000. As we wrap up last year we’ve already completed our first month of FY25. July is a large revenue month, bringing in about $90,000. For FY25, our fiscal year-end goal is $925,000. We are finalizing our work plans now which outline how we’ll raise $925,000 through member retention, recapture, upgrade and acquisition. As part of the FY25 plans we design our calendar of member events. Our next event is a Member Monday, taking place on August 26 at the New Mexico History Museum and New Mexico Museum of Art to showcase the concurrent exhibitions about Santa Fe’s Old Man Gloom, Zozobra, who celebrates his 100th birthday this year. We are also in the final stages of producing our fall issue of Member News which will mail to members in early September. On the technology front, last month the front desk admissions teams, began scanning membership cards to let us know when members visit the museums. This information will help us better communicate to members about the museums and events they visit most. Also, the next time you’re in the Vladem and History Museum Shop check out our Member Kiosk. Here you can join, renew, check your membership status, make a gift to a museum or submit a customer service inquiry. Lastly new to the shops, we launched a special one-time 20% discount for first time members who join on the spot. In three short weeks this has already proven to be a popular offering with many new members joining.
