Construction update from the Vladem Contemporary As construction concluded at the end of June, work will continue in multiple areas. Much of the work on the interior has been completed and various spaces lack only painting touch ups and finishing details. The majority of the concrete floors have been polished and cabinetry has been installed in the classroom, catering kitchen, and artist-in-residence studio. Both elevators will soon be commissioned, allowing for the collections storage furniture to be installed. Bradbury Stamm will focus most of its attention in the remainder of the month on installing the panels on the western side of the building, paving the surrounding plaza, and laying the donors bricks on the floor of the breezeway. Installation of the Leo Villareal piece has been completed, and the artist finished his design mid-June. Save the date! Save the date of September 20th for the Vladem Grand Opening Gala. Image: Yokai Train, Image courtesy of Sky Railway Programs in Partnership with the International Folk Art Market IFAM and MOIFA, in partnership with Sky Railway, are hosting The Japanese Yōkai Train at 6:30 pm on Friday, July 7 with Junya Kono of Hyakuyobako Yōkai in Kyoto. MOIFA’s exhibition, Yōkai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan is open through September 4, 2023. Kono will also participate in MOIFA’s Arts Alive and help design and lead a spooky yōkai ghost parade as part of a family Saturday program on July 12 at 1 pm. MOIFA’s stellar educational team is leading Fanfare, a free, interactive Japanese uchiwa fan-making workshop for kids at 2 pm on Sunday, July 9, as part of IFAM’s Market lecture series taking place at SITE Santa Fe. MOIFA and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden are co-producing Japanese Craft in Light and Sound, an illuminated installation and musical event on July 9 in conjunction with IFAM 2023 participant Hiyoshiya from Kyoto. The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) nominated Native Hawaiian kapa artist, Lehuauakea, as part of their U.S.-born Artist Program to participate in the 2023 International Folk Art Market (IFAM) from July 6 – 9 at the Santa Fe Railyard Park. Read more about them here. The Friends of Folk Art (FOFA) will present a lecture and slide show with Lehuauakea at MOIFA’s Vernick Auditorium on Tuesday, July 11 from 3 to 5 pm. They will be discussing the history and significance of Native Hawaiian bark cloth (kapa), their practice as a contemporary kapa maker, and the concepts they address as an Indigenous mixed-media artist and cultural practitioner. Dive deep into folk art at MOIFA with the 40th Fab Favs tour presented over zoom with fabulous docents as your guides. It will be an engaging and intriguing peek into the world of Alexander Girard’s Multiple Visions for everyone; and all free. You can register here. Alebrijes on Milner Plaza and Programs Related to La Cartonería Mexicana / The Mexican Art of Paper and Paste Seven large-scale sculptures of fantastical, imaginary creatures, called alebrijes, are now installed on Milner Plaza through early October. These colorful works are on loan from the Mexican Cultural Center Du Page from their exhibition, Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World. Come enjoy these colorful outdoor sculptures! Visitors to Museum Hill are in for a real treat this summer. On August 6 at 2 pm, Marta Turok, cultural advisor to the exhibition and curator at the Franz Meyer Museum in Mexico, will present a talk on cartonería and the evolution of alebrijes with artist Leo Linares, whose work is featured in the exhibition and who is from one of the most respected cartonería families in Mexico. Mr. Linares will also provide an artist demonstration on an alebrije piece he is developing to become part of the exhibition. The exhibition explores the connections between weaving and photography as modes of engagement with place in the American Southwest and examines each as a way of seeing and knowing Dinétah, the Navajo homeland. Member Previews are free and open to all members and include food, refreshments, entertainment and a chance to see the exhibition before it opens to the public.CAMPAIGNSOn July 10 the telemarketing firm SD&A will call our members to request an increase in membership. This is last component in our two-mailing, two email campaign. This campaign has performed well with more than 275 members Stepping Up to a higher level generating more than $60,000 in revenue.

Chiles and Sherds 2023 is a wrap! Despite the weather cancellation, the Friends of Archeology team went out of their way to organize a number of follow-up hikes to accommodate the folks who signed up. I was fortunate to join the tour this past Sunday, led by Chuck Hannaford. Chuck’s extensive knowledge of migration, residential and and image-making histories was incredible to listen to. The rock-art was overwhelming in its scale and complexity. I, like many others, am grateful for programs like this. They demonstrate the need for repositories of archaeological information like the OAS, and the need to protect spaces like San Cristobal. Kudos to the Friends of Archeology for not only raising awareness, but raising funds to support more programs like Chiles and Sherds! Photo caption: Chiles and Sherds 2023.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture will be opening Horizons: Weaving Between the Lines with Diné Textiles to the public on Sunday, July 16. I am so excited to see this exhibition come to fruition after witnessing the curatorial team pour so much intention and thoughtfulness into every detail over the last year. The textiles, many of which have never been displayed, will be enveloped in the scenes of Dinétah that have and will continue to define them. I know that the team has really honored the weavings selected and the museum they will be on display in.I am continuously grateful to the donors who helped to bring Horizons to the public. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the exhibition’s Lead Sponsors, France A. Córdova and Christian J. Foster.
