Ways to Save Taxes and Grow Your Income Your generosity has enabled the museums we support to curate exceptional exhibitions, preserve our diverse cultural heritage and provide educational programs that inspire and enlighten our community. When considering making a charitable gift through the Foundation, here are some ways for you to consider that may also help you save on taxes and grow your income: The Basics Appreciated Stock – Easily make charitable gifts to the institutions you love by transferring appreciated stock to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. We receive the present value of the stock, while you pay no capital gains tax and receive an income tax deduction. Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) – If you are aged 70½ or older there is another powerful tool that you are uniquely positioned to leverage for your benefit. This is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) or IRA Charitable Rollover. A QCD allows you to donate up to $108,000 directly from your IRA to a qualified charity such as ours, without having to include the distribution in your taxable income. Income for Life Charitable Gift Annuity – This type of gift will provide you with fixed income payments for life and possibly provide capital gains benefits. For more information, click here. Once widely recognized for her contributions to the visual arts, Shonnard’s legacy has been largely overlooked in recent decades. In addition to her artistic achievements, Shonnard left a lasting impact by donating her home and studio to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, which now serves as the Foundation’s offices. Photo by Addison Doty. “We can, and I firmly believe we should, preserve evidence of the past … as nourishment for the creative spirit of the present.” — Alexander Girard The Museum of International Folk Art presents Paraphernalia of an Active Mind: The Girard Foundation Archives, a long-term display of 133 decorated research file boxes from the personal collection of Alexander Girard. This ongoing mini display just outside the Bartlett Library opens Friday, February 28, 2025, and archival materials from this collection will be on continuous rotation. In May 1961, Alexander and Susan Girard created the Girard Foundation to manage their collection of folk art and toys. As Alexander Girard amassed research materials on myriad subjects—described by designer Jonathan Olivares as the “paraphernalia of an active mind”—he organized these in cardboard file boxes labelled by hand and decorated with papers both from his international collection and of his own design. Following the gift of the Girard Foundation folk art collection to the Museum of International Folk Art in 1979, a set of these file boxes was donated to the museum archives. Other boxes were kept by the Girard family or donated to the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. The Girard archives at MOIFA are accessible through the Bartlett Library and Archives. With creativity and imagination, they transform backyards and playgrounds destroyed by missiles, invent fairy tales where vegetable armies vanquish Russian attackers, and carry on the Ukrainian tradition of music and dance in demolished studios. A portrait of life behind the frontlines as seen through the eyes of the children who will inherit a country struggling to survive a brutal invasion.   School Partnership at Sweeney Elementary for La Cartonería Mexicana Image: Michelle Rodriguez with students in La Cartonería Mexicana: The Mexican Art of Paper and Paste at MOIFA Students from Sweeney Elementary School will be taking a field trip to view the La Cartonería Mexicana: The Mexican Art of Paper and Paste on February 25. Papier mâché artist Francisco Rodriguez will meet the students and do short presentations on the tradition of cartonería. Following the fieldtrip, bilingual educator Kemely Gomez, will be co-facilitating a mask making project at Sweeney during the month of March. In the 1860s, Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner was where more than 9,500 Dine (Navajo) and approximately 500 Nde (Mescalero Apache) people were forcibly removed and subsequently interned.  Despite the Memorial’s painful past, the president of the Friends of the Bosque Redondo Memorial, Mary Ann Cortese, had a vision to allow young visitors in particular the opportunity to create art—when words were not enough—by drawing symbols or phrases on small tiles that reflected their reactions to the site. Today, the outdoor tile mural called Reactions to Hweeldi is comprised of 1,276 handmade tiles and stands magnificently at 12 feet high by 63 feet long. Although mural began in 2007, a $60,000 special appropriation by the State’s Legislature allowed the project to be completed in 2023.  To learn more about and plan your visit to Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner, click here. The new year is off to a great start. General membership has received $580,000 fiscal year to date thanks to a strong response to our renewals and new member acquisition efforts. We are working on our spring Step Up, Rejoin and New member campaigns. Our Step Up offerings will be beautiful as we draw inspiration from the upcoming exhibition on Gustave Baumann at the New Mexico Museum of Art, for Rejoin we will invite past members to renew as we announce 10 exhibitions and members-only experiences in the coming months and our New member campaign will encourage the community to join through our outstanding offer of free admission to more than 1,300 cultural institutions through the North American Reciprocal Museum Association. Be on the lookout for details in the mail, email, onsite and on social media. This month, on February 13 we will host a special guided tour of Weaving Meanings at the Museum of International Folk Art for our members who generously stepped up last fall. Cara and Brittny have also been working hard on an exciting members-only event calendar which will be finished and announced soon. We just finished our spring edition of Member News which hits members’ mailboxes in March. Our cover story is on artist Eugenie Shonnard, who is the focus of an upcoming exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art. As many of you know, Shonnard bequeathed her home to the Foundation, and it has become our new offices. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming exhibition or event soon.
